Africell Sierra Leone received high praise<\/strong> for its commitment to strengthening community radio<\/strong> during the 20th anniversary celebration of MODCAR 94.9 FM<\/strong> in Moyamba District on February 28, 2025<\/strong>. The event, which was held on the eve of Ramadan, brought together journalists, community leaders, and stakeholders to reflect on the role of community radio in fostering development and civic engagement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the highlights of the celebration was the presentation of a Certificate of Recognition<\/strong> to Alhaji Manika Kamara, Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ)<\/strong>. The people of Moyamba and MODCAR FM honored Kamara for his unwavering dedication, outstanding performance, and valuable contributions to media development in the district<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keynote Address: The Power of Community Radio<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kamara, who served as Keynote Speaker<\/strong>, addressed the gathering on the theme \u201cCommunity Ownership of the Radio \u2013 Be Visible.\u201d<\/strong> In his speech, he emphasized the critical role of community radio in ensuring access to vital information<\/strong>, promoting transparency, and amplifying local voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He reflected on past challenges faced by MODCAR FM, particularly its struggle with electricity supply<\/strong>, which had significantly hindered operations. Kamara recalled a media engagement in Moyamba<\/strong> organized by the Independent Radio Network (IRN) in collaboration with SLAJ<\/strong>, where he witnessed firsthand the station\u2019s difficulties<\/strong> in staying on air due to erratic power supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Motivated by the station\u2019s plight, Kamara reached out to Africell Sierra Leone<\/strong> through Abdul Karim Sesay<\/strong>, a dedicated professional within the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He recounted the moment of relief<\/strong> when he received a call from the station manager a few weeks later with the good news:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMODCAR is now enjoying a 24-hour electricity supply<\/strong> thanks to Africell\u2019s intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Kamara expressed profound gratitude to Africell Sierra Leone for their swift response<\/strong> to the community\u2019s needs, describing their support as a crucial lifeline for media sustainability in the region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
