In a bold move to bridge the digital divide and foster technological empowerment among women and girls, Africell Sierra Leone<\/strong> has partnered with Media Matters for Women (MMW)<\/strong> to deliver digital literacy training to over 300 schoolgirls and female entrepreneurs<\/strong> in rural areas across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transformative initiative, known as the Digitruck Salone Project<\/strong>, is spearheaded by MMW with financial backing from Close the Gap<\/strong> through the Internet Society Foundation<\/strong>. Africell\u2019s support has been central in rolling out this mobile digital classroom to remote communities, offering practical tech training and opening new paths for education, entrepreneurship, and empowerment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Classroom on Wheels<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Digitruck<\/strong> itself is a striking example of innovation in development. A converted 40-foot shipping container<\/strong>, the mobile unit is equipped with solar power, Wi-Fi, laptops, and other digital tools<\/strong>. It is designed to travel through under-resourced areas\u2014specifically the Western Area Rural District, Bombali, and Kenema<\/strong>\u2014bringing education directly to those who need it most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Alinah Oliet Kallon<\/strong>, Project Manager for Digitruck Salone, a total of 308 schoolgirls<\/strong> and 31 female entrepreneurs<\/strong> have benefited from the project so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith the help of Africell and other partners, we are able to achieve our goal of empowering girls with digital tools to enhance their learning and help women grow their businesses,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She further emphasized the program\u2019s impact on narrowing the gender gap in technology access<\/strong>, a persistent issue especially pronounced in rural communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at a recent event commemorating the project\u2019s progress, Africell\u2019s Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Joe Abass Bangura<\/strong>, offered both personal insights and corporate commitment. This initiative is not Africell\u2019s first foray into social impact. The telecommunications giant has a track record of supporting tech education and innovation<\/strong> through nationwide coding boot camps, mobile computer labs<\/strong>, and STEM-focused outreach programs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through its collaboration with MMW and other stakeholders, the Digitruck Salone Project<\/strong> is paving the way for a generation of tech-savvy women and girls, capable of participating fully in Sierra Leone\u2019s digital economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
