Ibrahim Bankapoma Kargbo, President of the SLTU, announced that the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) has formally requested the Ministry of Finance to reinstate 1,802 teachers who were recently re-verified and re-registered. These teachers, once reinstated, will receive salary payments retroactive to July 2025, with a three-month grace period to finalize the necessary financial arrangements.

The suspension of 4,662 teachers, which followed the TSC’s nationwide verification and registration exercise conducted between March and April 2025, sparked controversy and criticism from both teachers and the union. The process, which aimed to ensure only verified teachers remained on the government payroll, led to the suspension of a significant number of educators, many of whom, including union officials, were mistakenly included on the list. Kargbo himself was wrongly suspended, highlighting concerns over the accuracy and fairness of the verification process.

The SLTU had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the verification exercise, particularly because their request to review the suspension list before the implementation of the suspension order was denied. It wasn’t until after the list was issued in July that the SLTU was able to assess the situation and raise questions about the validity of some suspensions. The union subsequently launched a local publication of the suspended teachers’ names to allow communities to verify their legitimacy. This initiative uncovered that even some SLTU executives had been affected by the suspensions.

While the reinstatement of 1,802 teachers is a positive development, the union continues to advocate for the full restoration of all teachers affected by the suspension. The SLTU has renewed its calls for transparency and fairness in the process, insisting that the government must ensure that all verified teachers are reinstated and any backpay owed is promptly settled.

The union’s efforts continue, with ongoing discussions with both the TSC and the Ministry of Finance to address the remaining suspensions and guarantee that no legitimate teacher is unfairly penalized. Despite the progress made, many teachers are still waiting for their reinstatement, and the SLTU is committed to ensuring that the final resolution reflects the true status of the teaching staff.

BY ABDUL RAHMAN BAH The Sierra Leone Teachers’ Union (SLTU) has confirmed that significant progress…

[1

post-2240","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
