Energy Sector Lead, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella<\/strong>, has described the signing of a lease agreement between the Government of Sierra Leone<\/strong> and Release by Scatec<\/strong> for the deployment of a 40MW fast-track power plant<\/strong> in Kamakwie, Karene District<\/strong>, as a significant breakthrough in the country\u2019s pursuit of energy sovereignty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project, expected to be commissioned by the second quarter of 2026<\/strong>, aligns with Sierra Leone\u2019s ambitious Mission 300<\/strong> initiative, which seeks to deliver 1.7GW of new generation capacity by 2030<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Yumkella commended the partnership forged with Scatec, emphasizing that the project represents a major step toward achieving Sierra Leone\u2019s national energy goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis partnership is a significant milestone in the Government\u2019s efforts to address urgent energy needs in the provinces, particularly for industrial development and improved quality of life,\u201d Dr. Yumkella said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Kamakwie site was selected due to its strategic location and grid accessibility, enabling EGTC and EDSA to sell power to the regional network.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Delivered through an innovative leasing model<\/strong>, the project will provide a modular, containerized energy solution<\/strong> that is clean, reliable, and rapidly deployable<\/strong>, designed to meet the fast-growing power demands of emerging markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Yumkella also disclosed that His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio<\/strong> is expected to perform the groundbreaking ceremony later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boosting National Capacity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Minister of Finance, Fantamadi Bangura<\/strong>, described the signing as a major milestone in the implementation of the Mission 300 Compact<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He expressed appreciation to the International Finance Corporation (IFC)<\/strong> and the World Bank<\/strong> for facilitating the agreement, noting that the additional 40MW<\/strong> will increase Sierra Leone\u2019s total renewable energy capacity to 167MW<\/strong>, effectively doubling the country\u2019s current solar output by 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hans Olav Kvalvaag<\/strong>, Chief Executive Officer of Scatec, said his company was pleased with the strong collaboration built with Sierra Leone, highlighting the Government\u2019s swift mobilization of resources and commitment to addressing the country\u2019s energy challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are committed to supporting Sierra Leone\u2019s efforts by helping the country deliver clean, reliable electricity to communities across the nation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Kamakwie power plant<\/strong> is expected to provide critical support to the national grid, reduce generation shortfalls, and help meet the growing demand for electricity across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
