The new facility expands the former Koidu Government Hospital\u2019s capacity from <strong>48 to 120 beds<\/strong>, increases <strong>operating theatres from one to three<\/strong>, and introduces <strong>Sierra Leone\u2019s first rural-based Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 a game changer for maternal and child health outcomes in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery generation is remembered for the foundation it lays. Today, here in Kono, we lay a foundation for life itself,\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>President Dr. Julius Maada Bio<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his keynote address, President Bio said the Centre stands as a testament to his government\u2019s unwavering commitment to quality healthcare and human capital development. \u201cThis Centre is a symbol of our belief that every mother deserves safety, every child deserves a chance, and every Sierra Leonean deserves to live in health and dignity,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The President drew a symbolic contrast between Kono\u2019s mineral wealth and the new hospital\u2019s humanitarian value: <em>\u201cKono has long been known for its diamonds, but today we celebrate something more precious \u2014 the sparkle of life, health, and hope.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He emphasized that the Maternal Center of Excellence is at the heart of his government\u2019s <strong>Human Capital Development Agenda<\/strong>, one of the <em>Big Five Game Changers<\/em>, underscoring that national progress begins with healthy mothers and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Bio noted that investments in healthcare directly strengthen education, productivity, and prosperity. \u201cFor far too long, too many mothers have died while giving life \u2014 but that story is changing,\u201d he affirmed, highlighting that maternal deaths have dropped by more than <strong>70 percent<\/strong>&nbsp;in the last two decades, while <strong>immunisation rates now rank among the highest in West Africa.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further announced that the new Centre will <strong>double the capacity of the Koidu Government Hospital<\/strong>&nbsp;and serve as a <strong>national training hub for doctors, nurses, and midwives<\/strong>. \u201cQuality healthcare should not depend on geography, but on vision and commitment,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Bio also expressed profound gratitude to <strong>Partners In Health (PIH)<\/strong>&nbsp;for their steadfast collaboration and paid tribute to the late <strong>Dr. Paul Farmer<\/strong>, PIH Co-Founder, whose conviction that <em>\u201chealth care is a human right\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;continues to guide Sierra Leone\u2019s progress.<br>\u201cOpening this Centre on his birthday makes this moment particularly meaningful \u2014 a living tribute to his compassion, courage, and humanity,\u201d the President noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The President also extended appreciation to <strong>Build Health International<\/strong>&nbsp;and the <strong>Vlogbrothers community<\/strong>, led by <em>John and Hank Green<\/em>, for their crucial support and investment in Sierra Leone\u2019s health system. \u201cYour investment has built more than a hospital \u2014 you have built hope and possibility,\u201d he affirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Bio described the project as one built not only with bricks and mortar but also with <strong>trust and shared purpose<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 between government and development partners, and between healthcare workers and their communities. \u201cIt reflects what we can achieve when we work together with a shared vision to protect life and build the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlighting national progress, President Bio revealed that <strong>maternal mortality has dropped from 717 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2019 to 354 today<\/strong>, with the government targeting a further reduction to <strong>below 70 by 2030.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis progress proves that even nations once defined by fragility can become beacons of resilience and reform,\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>President Bio concluded.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event was attended by a cross-section of dignitaries, including the <strong>Minister of Health<\/strong>, senior government officials, representatives from <strong>Partners In Health<\/strong>, <strong>Build Health International<\/strong>, traditional leaders, and other key stakeholders.
