he International Maritime Organization (IMO) has pledged to provide extensive technical support to Sierra Leone, marking a major diplomatic and sectoral achievement following a series of high-level engagements at the 34th Session of the IMO Assembly in London, United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This development emerged after the Senior Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, who served as the Alternate Head of Sierra Leone\u2019s delegation, joined other representatives in a number of strategic bilateral meetings with IMO officials and member states. The engagements focused on strengthening Sierra Leone\u2019s maritime governance, addressing compliance gaps, and exploring opportunities for deeper collaboration. He described the IMO\u2019s commitment as a transformative step for the country\u2019s maritime future, noting that such support has been long overdue for a nation with significant but underutilized maritime potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Senior Permanent Secretary, Edward Kwame Yankson, the breakthrough was strongly influenced by the powerful and well-articulated presentation delivered by Ambassador Alhaji Fanday Turay, Minister of Transport and Aviation. During the Assembly\u2019s opening session, the Minister highlighted Sierra Leone\u2019s strategic position along major shipping routes, the government\u2019s ongoing reforms, and the urgent need for capacity-building support to modernize maritime operations. His presentation not only resonated with member states but also set the tone for positive engagement throughout the Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Yankson further revealed that the Minister\u2019s direct and productive engagement with the IMO Secretary-General provided an additional diplomatic boost, reinforcing Sierra Leone\u2019s commitment to strengthening its maritime institutions and complying with global regulatory frameworks. The Secretary-General reportedly expressed the IMO\u2019s readiness to accompany Sierra Leone on its reform journey, outlining possible areas of cooperation that could begin as early as next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forthcoming technical assistance is expected to cover a wide range of support areas, including maritime safety and security, port state control, environmental compliance, institutional strengthening, training of maritime personnel, and alignment with international maritime conventions.
