The newly constructed ten-room facility stands as a major intervention aimed at improving access to quality healthcare services for underserved populations in the district.

The commissioning ceremony, held on March 28, 2026, attracted a wide cross-section of stakeholders, including senior government officials, traditional authorities, development partners, and community residents. The facility was formally inaugurated by the Honourable Deputy Minister of Health I, Dr. Charles Senesie, alongside the Chief Executive Officer of Orange Sierra Leone, Madam Aicha Touré.

For years, residents of Wai and its surrounding communities have faced considerable challenges in accessing healthcare services, often travelling long distances under difficult conditions to seek medical attention. Limited infrastructure, inadequate staffing, and lack of essential medical equipment have historically contributed to poor health outcomes, particularly among women and children. The establishment of this modern health centre is therefore expected to significantly reduce these barriers and bring life-saving services closer to the people.

Providing an overview of the project, Orange Sierra Leone’s Corporate Social Responsibility Officer, Mohamed Santos Bangura, traced its origins to the groundbreaking ceremony held on April 17, 2025. He described the completion of the facility as a landmark achievement, reflecting Orange Sierra Leone’s unwavering commitment to supporting national development priorities and improving the wellbeing of vulnerable communities.

Bangura emphasized that the project was carefully designed to address critical gaps in rural healthcare delivery, with particular focus on maternal and child health services. He noted that improved access to skilled care during pregnancy, childbirth, and early childhood would play a crucial role in reducing preventable diseases and lowering maternal and infant mortality rates in the district.

In his remarks, the Paramount Chief of Sorogbema Chiefdom, Mustapha Jeangay Massaquoi III, expressed deep gratitude to Orange Sierra Leone for what he described as a timely and transformative intervention. He highlighted the long-standing healthcare challenges faced by his people and noted that the new facility represents hope, progress, and a renewed sense of dignity for the community.

He further assured all stakeholders that the chiefdom would take full ownership of the facility, emphasizing the importance of proper maintenance, community participation, and sustained collaboration with health authorities to ensure its long-term success.

Speaking at the ceremony, Orange Sierra Leone CEO, Madam Aicha Touré, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to promoting community wellbeing and contributing to national development. She explained that the facility, which includes a fully equipped labour ward and essential medical infrastructure, was specifically designed to respond to the most urgent healthcare needs of the community.

According to Madam Touré, the centre will provide a wide range of essential services, including maternal and child healthcare, outpatient consultations, emergency treatment, and basic diagnostic services. She further noted that the project is aligned with the Orange Foundation’s broader maternal mortality reduction programme, which seeks to improve health outcomes for women and children across underserved communities.

She stressed that beyond infrastructure, Orange Sierra Leone remains committed to supporting sustainable healthcare delivery through partnerships, innovation, and targeted interventions that directly impact lives.

Delivering the keynote address, the Honourable Deputy Minister of Health I, Dr. Charles Senesie, commended Orange Sierra Leone for complementing government efforts in strengthening the country’s healthcare system. He revealed that the former Wai Maternal and Child Health Post (MCHP) has now been upgraded to a fully functional Community Health Centre (CHC), significantly enhancing its capacity to deliver comprehensive healthcare services.

He further assured the community of government’s commitment to deploying qualified healthcare personnel, ensuring consistent supply of essential medicines, and maintaining high standards of service delivery at the facility.

The event also featured remarks from philanthropist Mr. Salim Feika, a key contributor to the project, who expressed appreciation to all partners involved, including the Ministry of Health, the District Health Management Team, and local authorities. As part of his contribution, Feika donated two large waste disposal containers and chairs to improve sanitation and patient comfort, as well as a motorbike to support emergency response and outreach services.

While commending the progress made, Feika called on development partners and stakeholders to support additional needs of the facility, including the construction of staff quarters, provision of an ambulance, and continuous training and capacity building for healthcare workers.

In his closing remarks, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Liberia, Eddie Sidikie Mansaray, urged residents of Wai and neighbouring communities to take full ownership of the health centre by utilizing its services responsibly and supporting healthcare workers in maintaining high standards of care.
