While acknowledging the importance of periodic engagements such as the press cocktail, he stressed that annual interactions alone are insufficient to build a resilient, independent, and impactful media ecosystem.

According to him, the media must be seen not merely as a communication tool for publicity, but as a strategic development partner whose role is essential to national accountability and progress.

His remarks drew attention to the increasingly fragile conditions under which many journalists operate in Sierra Leone. He highlighted financial instability, limited institutional support, and weak welfare systems as major constraints undermining effective journalism. Without deliberate and sustained investment, he warned, the media risks being unable to fulfil its constitutional mandate of informing the public and holding power to account.

In a particularly pointed appeal, he urged NASSIT to consider introducing structured support mechanisms for the media sector, including funding opportunities for investigative journalism, especially on issues relating to social protection, governance, and public finance transparency.

He further called for the development of targeted capacity-building programmes aimed at improving journalists’ understanding of complex financial systems, pensions administration, and social security frameworks. According to him, such initiatives would enhance the quality, accuracy, and depth of reporting on national development issues.

The SLAJ President also raised concerns about widespread non-compliance with social security contributions within the media sector. He warned that many veteran journalists are now approaching retirement without access to benefits due to years of irregular or absent contributions. This, he noted, represents a systemic failure that demands urgent corrective action.

He therefore called on media owners to take responsibility for the welfare of their employees and ensure strict compliance with NASSIT requirements. He also reiterated his ongoing advocacy for improved working conditions, including the enforcement of a minimum wage for journalists across the country.

Responding to these concerns, the Director General of NASSIT, Mohamed Fuaad Daboh, delivered a reflective and reform-oriented response, emphasizing that the engagement was intended to go beyond ceremony and foster meaningful institutional dialogue.

He challenged both NASSIT and the media to move away from what he described as outdated, transactional relationships—where interaction is limited to event coverage and advertising exchanges—and instead embrace a more strategic and collaborative partnership.

According to him, the media should play a deeper role in national development by helping to interpret data, shape public understanding, and facilitate informed civic engagement. He stressed that communication in today’s environment must go beyond headlines to include context, analysis, and public education.

Drawing from institutional reforms currently underway at NASSIT, he noted that the Trust is working to expand coverage, strengthen compliance, and improve benefit delivery. However, he emphasized that these reforms cannot succeed without active media participation in public sensitization and accountability processes.

Adding a policy dimension to the discussion, the Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, expressed concern over the low level of participation in the national social security scheme, particularly among media institutions.

He described this trend as a serious threat to workers’ long-term welfare and urged immediate corrective measures. The Minister stressed that social protection is not optional but a fundamental necessity, especially in a labour environment marked by uncertainty and informal employment structures.

He called on media organisations to lead by example in complying with NASSIT regulations and reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening enforcement mechanisms while continuing stakeholder engagement.

As the discussions progressed, a shared understanding began to emerge: the challenges facing the media and the social security system are deeply interconnected. A weak media sector undermines transparency and accountability, while weak social protection systems expose workers to vulnerability and economic insecurity. Addressing one without the other, participants agreed, would limit national progress.

The event also highlighted the urgent need for innovation within the media industry. With the rapid shift toward digital platforms, stakeholders called for increased investment in technology, digital skills training, and media entrepreneurship to ensure sustainability and relevance in a changing information landscape.

Participants further noted that strengthening the media sector is not only beneficial for journalists but essential for society at large, as it enhances access to credible information, promotes civic participation, and strengthens democracy.

In conclusion, the NASSIT press cocktail stood out as more than a ceremonial gathering—it became a platform for rethinking institutional relationships and national priorities. It reinforced the importance of collaboration, transparency, and mutual accountability in driving development.

However, as stakeholders departed the venue, one message remained clear: the true impact of the dialogue will be measured not in speeches delivered, but in the concrete actions that follow to strengthen both the media landscape and the social security system in Sierra Leone.

By Abdul Rahman Bah The National Social Security and Insurance Trust (National Social Security and…

[1

post-2726","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
