The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL), with support from the Danish Institute for Human Rights, has successfully concluded a community engagement and awareness-raising campaign in Kenema aimed at deepening public understanding of the human rights implications of climate change.

The one-day event, held on November 25th, 2025, at the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) Hall, attracted a diverse group of participants, including representatives from the Sierra Leone Police, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, government ministries and agencies, persons with disabilities, youth groups, and the media.

During the engagement, stakeholders explored the findings of HRCSL’s climate change assessment report and discussed how climate-induced disasters increasingly threaten livelihoods, safety, and basic human rights across Sierra Leone. Participants emphasized the need for stronger community resilience and collective action to safeguard the environment and protect vulnerable populations.

As part of its broader response to climate-related human rights concerns, the HRCSL has established a Directorate of Climate Change and Information Services. The new directorate is tasked with monitoring environmental trends, raising public awareness, and coordinating with partners to ensure that climate policies and interventions prioritize the rights and well-being of citizens.
