In a significant move towards enhancing transparency and accountability, the Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, has announced a new initiative aimed at empowering citizens with timely access to public information. This announcement was made during the 10th-anniversary celebration of the Right to Access Information Commission (RAIC) at the Foreign Service Academy on September 15, 2024.

Minister Bah emphasized that the right to information is a fundamental aspect of democracy and civic engagement. “Access to information is not merely a privilege; it is a vital civic right that every citizen should exercise,” he stated. He urged public institutions to embrace a culture of openness, highlighting that transparency is essential for building trust between the government and the public.

The Minister acknowledged the achievements of the RAIC over the past decade, particularly its role in promoting the Right to Access Information Act enacted in 2013. He noted that these efforts have been instrumental in enhancing citizens’ ability to engage with governmental processes and hold officials accountable.

Minister Bah also addressed the challenges posed by the digital age, specifically the rise of misinformation and the impact of artificial intelligence. He called for the RAIC to take proactive measures in educating the public about verifying information and recognizing credible sources. “As we advance in technology, our responsibility to provide accurate information becomes even more critical,” he stressed.

In a bid to further improve access to information, the Ministry is developing a comprehensive Records and Archive Policy alongside a Data Protection Bill. These initiatives aim to ensure the preservation of public records while safeguarding citizens’ rights to access information.

The event featured remarks from the Deputy Minister of Information and Civic Education, Bockarie Abdel Aziz Bawoh, who echoed the call for vigilance against misinformation in the digital era. He urged citizens to actively seek information and remain engaged in discussions about their rights.

The 10th anniversary celebration of the RAIC serves as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to transparency and the importance of informed citizenship. With new initiatives on the horizon, the Ministry of Information aims to empower Sierra Leoneans to play an active role in the democratic process.
