Bridging Digital Divides President Bio’s Vision for SL Connectivity at the Commonwealth Forum

Apia, Samoa, Thursday, October 24, 2024—His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio participated as a panelist in the 27th Commonwealth Business Forum 2024, engaging in critical discussions on the role of technology in governance and economic development. During the session titled “Connecting the Commonwealth,” he asserted his government’s belief that technology is an effective means to combat corruption and foster economic growth.

The panel, which included Lord Maryland of Odstock, Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC), and Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink, was moderated by Richard Griffiths from Arentfox Schiff LLP. This gathering of influential leaders provided a platform to explore innovative strategies for enhancing connectivity and collaboration among Commonwealth nations.

President Bio highlighted the transformative impact that Starlink has had in Sierra Leone, particularly in expanding internet connectivity across the nation. He noted, “Starlink has made significant inroads in our country, with stronger connections at all installation points.” This advancement is particularly crucial for Sierra Leone, which has been striving to improve its technological infrastructure and connect more effectively with the global community. “We are an ambitious nation looking forward to further integration with the world,” he added.

Describing Starlink as a “revolutionary and viable tool,” President Bio recommended its services to other nations, emphasizing the importance of modern connectivity. He elaborated on how the government has utilized fiber optic connections, which have been extended to nearly 14 of Sierra Leone’s 16 districts. “With reliable internet, we can connect to the world from anywhere,” he stated, reinforcing the necessity of robust digital infrastructure for national development.

As a low-income country, President Bio acknowledged the pressing need for technological advancements and innovation. He explained, “We have identified technology as the key solution to our challenges, and despite the obstacles we face, we must make progress.” This forward-looking approach underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging technology to drive socioeconomic growth.

The President highlighted the positive trends in internet usage within Sierra Leone, attributing this increase to the efficiency and benefits that technology brings to both government operations and the daily lives of citizens. “We believe that technology is a viable solution to combat corruption by reducing cash transactions,” he said, emphasizing its potential to improve sectors such as healthcare, education, and agriculture. This shift toward digital solutions can enhance transparency and accountability in public spending, which is vital for fostering public trust.

In his address, President Bio also called for innovative solutions to propel Sierra Leone’s ongoing digital transformation to greater heights. He expressed confidence that inclusive technology would play a significant role in achieving his government’s human capital development goals, specifically by connecting more students with educational institutions. “We must ensure our youth have access to fit-for-purpose education, which is essential for their future success,” he asserted.

Lauren Dreyer, Vice President for Starlink, expressed her gratitude to President Bio and the people of Sierra Leone for their enthusiastic acceptance of Starlink’s services. She informed the Commonwealth forum that the company is in the process of establishing operations in various countries, with a focus on ensuring their services are accessible to a diverse range of groups and individuals. “Individual empowerment is key to our mission,” she emphasized, highlighting the countless opportunities that technology can create for economic and social advancement.

Moderator Richard Griffiths thanked President Bio for his participation in the Commonwealth Business Forum, praising his proactive stance on advancing technology in Sierra Leone.
