On July 2, 2025 – Her Excellency Dr. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former President of Liberia and Nobel Peace Laureate, paid a courtesy visit to His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio at State House in Freetown to personally congratulate him on his recent appointment as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS.

During the visit, Dr. Sirleaf expressed admiration for President Bio’s leadership, stating that his election to the chairmanship comes at a critical time for the region—marked by both challenges and opportunities.

“With you as the new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, we are confident that you will deliver. By the end of your tenure, ECOWAS will be proud of your leadership,” she said.

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s most respected stateswomen, Dr. Sirleaf praised President Bio’s record of principled governance and his continued commitment to peace, democracy, and regional development.

In response, President Bio expressed gratitude for Dr. Sirleaf’s visit and longstanding friendship. “Madam President, you have always honoured me with your presence whenever you’re in Sierra Leone, and you are always welcome here,” he remarked. He thanked her for her support and goodwill, and assured her of his full dedication to the responsibilities of his new role.

President Bio reaffirmed his commitment to advancing peace, democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and the empowerment of women and girls—values that both leaders have consistently championed.

The meeting concluded with mutual expressions of solidarity and optimism for the continued advancement of the West African region under Sierra Leone’s leadership.
