The Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NatCA), Sierra Leone, has reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to advancing regional digital integration, hailing the launch of seamless mobile roaming between Liberia and Sierra Leone as “a tangible step toward a seamless, borderless digital West Africa.”

Delivering the keynote address at the Regional Roaming Conference in Monrovia, Liberia—organized by the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA)—the Director-General joined fellow heads of National Regulatory Authorities, policymakers, and industry leaders to mark two major milestones in West Africa’s digital transformation agenda:

  • The official launch of seamless roaming services between Sierra Leone and Liberia.
  • The signing of a bilateral roaming agreement between Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire.

The seamless roaming initiative will enable mobile subscribers in participating countries to use their phones across borders without facing high roaming charges. This breakthrough is expected to enhance connectivity for travelers, traders, and businesses, strengthen regional trade, foster cross-border collaboration, and accelerate the growth of the digital economy—aligning with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) vision for a unified digital market.

The Director-General stressed that these achievements are more than technical upgrades, describing them as pivotal steps toward deepening regional cooperation, driving economic growth, and promoting social inclusion. He highlighted the role of affordable, reliable communications in stimulating innovation, improving public services, and empowering citizens across West Africa.

Industry experts at the conference welcomed the agreements as a potential game-changer for the subregion, paving the way for greater harmonization of telecommunications policies and infrastructure. Delegates also explored strategies to extend the initiative to other ECOWAS member states, reinforcing the shared ambition of building a truly connected and competitive West Africa.
