Shalimar Trading Company Reaffirms Its Legacy of Trust, Transparency, and National Commitment

In an era when public trust in business is often tested, Shalimar Trading Company continues to stand tall — not only as a dominant force in Sierra Leone’s automobile and motorcycle industry but also as a company built on relationships, transparency, and a steadfast commitment to national development.
On Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the company hosted a media engagement at its head office on Freetown Road, Lumley, to address recent claims of monopoly and reaffirm its longstanding mission of service to Sierra Leone. Leading the session was Mr. Moussa Mroue, Chairman and Managing Director, who offered rare insights into the company’s history, values, and vision for the future.
A Legacy Built Over Generations
Mr. Mroue began by emphasizing the deep historical connection between his family and Sierra Leone.
“The Mroue family has been here since 1926. All three generations were born and raised in this country. Sierra Leone is not just where we work — it is our home,” he said.
He explained that “Shalimar” — the company’s name — was inspired by his daughter, symbolizing the personal legacy and family values that underpin the business. Founded in 2006 in Kenema as a modest motorcycle sales outlet, the company has since expanded to over 25 branches nationwide, providing both products and after-sales services across the country.
Leadership in the Transport Sector
Over the past two decades, Shalimar Trading has become the exclusive distributor in Sierra Leone for several globally respected automobile and motorcycle brands, including TVS Motor Company, Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors, Suzuki, Sonalika Tractors, and Force Motors.
Mr. Mroue clarified that the company focuses solely on these brands and does not import or trade in other motorcycles — a deliberate strategy to maintain quality, reliability, and genuine partnerships.
Responding to allegations of market monopoly, he stated:
“Shalimar is not the only importer of motorcycles in Sierra Leone. But what sets us apart is the standard we maintain and the trust we’ve earned.”
Corporate Social Responsibility in Action
Beyond business operations, Shalimar Trading has distinguished itself through strong corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The company has consistently supported the nation during times of crisis — providing essential relief during the Ebola outbreak, the Matormeh mudslide, the COVID-19 pandemic, and seasonal floods.
Its community contributions also include the construction of a modern church and mosque in Wellington and ongoing humanitarian support to underserved communities.
“Our philosophy has always been to give back to the society that supports us,” Mr. Mroue emphasized.
He further revealed plans to expand into agriculture, signaling the company’s growing role in Sierra Leone’s economic diversification and national development.
Empowering Youth and Creating Jobs
A cornerstone of Shalimar’s success is its investment in human capital. The company has created hundreds of direct jobs and continues to provide skills training for young people, particularly in motorcycle and tricycle maintenance.
“We take pride in empowering Sierra Leonean youth to become self-reliant and skilled technicians,” Mr. Mroue said.
He added that this empowerment extends beyond economics — strengthening communities, reducing youth idleness, curbing crime, and promoting social stability.
Equal Access Through Uniform Pricing
Shalimar’s uniform pricing policy ensures fairness and accessibility across the country. Customers in every district pay the same price for products, eliminating regional disparities and the need for long-distance travel to obtain genuine goods.
“It’s part of our commitment to fairness and accessibility,” Mr. Mroue explained.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Shalimar plans to introduce taxi vehicles to help address urban transportation challenges — another step in its mission to enhance public mobility and service delivery.
The company also remains one of Sierra Leone’s largest private-sector taxpayers, contributing significantly to the national economy.
Media Commend Transparency
The engagement ended with journalists commending Shalimar’s openness and proactive engagement with the public. Mr. Mroue encouraged the media and citizens to seek accurate information about the company’s operations rather than rely on misinformation or speculation.
A Trusted Name in Sierra Leone
With a proven record of reliability, community investment, and national impact, Shalimar Trading Company has firmly established itself as one of Sierra Leone’s most trusted and responsible corporate institutions.
“Supporting Shalimar is not just supporting a business,” one journalist remarked at the close of the event. “It’s supporting national progress.”
