NatCA’s Regulatory Oversight Enhancing SL Connectivity and Addressing Internet Disruptions
In an ongoing effort to improve internet connectivity across Sierra Leone, the National Telecommunications Authority (NatCA) is taking decisive steps to address recent disruptions and expand network coverage throughout the country. Abdul Ben-Foday, Director of Corporate and Industry Affairs at NatCA, provided a detailed update on the current initiatives being undertaken to enhance the quality and reliability of internet services.
NatCA is working closely with Zoodlab, the company responsible for managing the subsea cable infrastructure, and Leocom, which oversees the National Fiber Backbone. These collaborations are crucial in resolving the internet disruptions that have affected many users in recent weeks. Ben-Foday emphasized that the coordinated efforts between NatCA, Zoodlab, and Leocom are aimed at stabilizing the internet connection and ensuring that the necessary upgrades are completed promptly.
Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) such as Orange, Qcell, and Africell are currently in the process of upgrading their services, with a focus on improving internet speed, coverage, and overall service quality. These upgrades are part of a broader initiative to modernize the telecommunications infrastructure in Sierra Leone. According to Ben-Foday, all work related to these upgrades is expected to be completed by the end of August 2024. Once finished, these enhancements will offer users a more consistent and reliable internet experience.
To further boost connectivity, the three leading MNOs—Orange, Qcell, and Africell—are embarking on an ambitious project to construct new telecommunications towers across the country. Orange and Qcell are each planning to build 50 new towers, while Africell is set to construct 118 towers. This expansion will significantly increase network reach, particularly in rural and underserved areas, ensuring that more Sierra Leoneans have access to reliable mobile and internet services.
The planned upgrades and new infrastructure projects are part of a comprehensive strategy to elevate Sierra Leone’s telecommunications standards to meet growing demand.
