In a groundbreaking effort to advance women’s health, the 25th Chinese Medical Team from Hunan Province, led by Dr. Chen Zhihui, has launched a free cervical cancer screening initiative across Freetown and its surrounding regions. This initiative represents a significant milestone in healthcare access for women in Sierra Leone, as it introduces high-precision HPV screening technology for the first time in the country, enhancing both the accuracy and sensitivity of cervical cancer detection.

Over the past month, Dr. Chen, along with Nurse Liu Xue and their dedicated team, has conducted nearly 20 screening events, successfully reaching over 600 women. Among those screened are high-risk groups, including HIV-positive women, who are particularly vulnerable to cervical cancer. The initiative is supported by the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health’s Disease Prevention and Control Center and the United Nations Population Fund, aiming to improve early detection rates of cervical cancer and provide vital health protection for women in the region.

The implementation of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology marks a significant advancement in screening capabilities, allowing for quicker and more precise detection of high-risk HPV types. This technology significantly reduces the risk of missed diagnoses, which is critical in a country where cervical cancer is a leading cause of mortality among women. Despite facing challenges, such as an unstable power supply in the region, the team has put in place contingency measures to ensure that every participant can complete the screening process.

Cervical cancer is primarily caused by persistent HPV infection, making regular screenings and HPV vaccinations essential preventive measures. By raising awareness about the importance of these screenings, the initiative not only seeks to identify cases early but also aims to educate women about their health options. Dr. Chen’s team is committed to continuing the program and plans to train local healthcare professionals, fostering a sustainable approach to women’s health in Sierra Leone.

In addition to the screenings, the initiative includes educational components that inform women about cervical cancer, its risk factors, and the significance of preventive care. By empowering women with knowledge and resources, the program seeks to change perceptions around cervical health and encourage more women to participate in screening initiatives.

This cervical cancer screening initiative highlights the growing partnership between China and Sierra Leone in public health and demonstrates the Chinese Medical Team’s commitment to international collaboration and women’s health. By addressing a critical health issue and enhancing healthcare access, this program aims to foster long-term health outcomes for Sierra Leonean women and pave the way for future health initiatives in the region.
