Ministry of Health Reaffirms Partnership with SLAJ Press at Town Hall Forum

The Ministry of Health’s Communication Unit recently hosted a town hall forum, bringing together key stakeholders to reaffirm its strong partnership with the press. The forum aimed to enhance information dissemination and public engagement in healthcare matters, reflecting the Ministry’s commitment to transparency and collaboration.

Ahmed Sahid Nasrallah, President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), praised the longstanding synergy between the Ministry and the media. He acknowledged the critical role the press has played during past health crises such as Ebola and Covid-19. Nasrallah highlighted the challenges health reporters face in obtaining timely information, stressing the need for improved communication channels to fortify this essential alliance.

Joseph Egbenda Kapuwa Esq., Chairman of the Independent Media Commission, commended the Ministry for acknowledging the media’s invaluable contribution to disseminating crucial health information. He emphasized the importance of nurturing and enhancing the enduring relationship between the Ministry and the press through initiatives like the town hall meeting.

The Minister of Information and Civic Education expressed gratitude for the Ministry of Health’s collaboration with the media in shaping public perceptions and promoting national development. He emphasized the shared goal of both organizations to improve living conditions in Sierra Leone for the benefit of all citizens.

Dr. Austin Demby, the Minister of Health, delivered the keynote address, drawing from his experience with the CDC. He underscored the press’s pivotal role as a crucial partner in the Ministry’s transformative efforts. Dr. Demby outlined plans for advancing the health sector through initiatives like the Universal Health Coverage program, focusing on patient-centric care. He stressed that community involvement is integral to healthcare progress, and the press plays a vital role in Fostering Public Engagement.

As the event concluded, focus group discussions explored strategies for ongoing coverage of impactful health narratives. A video presentation showcased the Minister of Health’s commitment to sustainability, featuring hospitals and primary healthcare units transitioning to green energy solutions following his pledge at COP23 in Dubai. Notably, six hospitals have already benefited from this initiative, marking significant progress toward an environmentally conscious healthcare system.

The town hall forum underscored the importance of the partnership between the Ministry of Health and the press. It highlighted the need for continuous collaboration to ensure effective communication and public engagement in healthcare matters. The event reinforced the shared commitment to improving health outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for all Sierra Leoneans.
