The article highlights Freetown’s significant decision to endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, marking a historic moment as the second African capital to do so. This decision positions Freetown alongside more than 120 cities and subnational governments globally in advocating for a transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.

Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr emphasizes the urgency of shifting away from fossil fuels, particularly stressing the role of African cities as dynamic centers for innovation in the fight against climate change. Freetown’s endorsement is not only a part of its broader climate action strategy, but it also reinforces the city’s growing influence on the global stage, especially in climate justice initiatives. As co-chair of C40 Cities, Aki-Sawyerr has been pivotal in shaping Freetown’s stance.

Mark Watts of C40 Cities praises Freetown’s commitment, urging wealthier nations to support the Global South in its transition to renewable energy. Karim Bah, a social justice activist, draws a parallel between this climate fight and Freetown’s historical role in the abolitionist movement, underscoring the symbolic significance of this action.

The endorsement is part of a global movement backed by numerous institutions, scientists, and global activists who are pushing for a just and inclusive energy transition. The treaty’s main goal is to phase out fossil fuels in an equitable manner, with wealthier nations leading the way and supporting developing regions. Seble Samuel, from the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, emphasizes the need to combat the exploitation of Africa’s fossil fuel wealth while tapping into its vast renewable energy potential.

Ultimately, Freetown’s stance represents a powerful challenge to the historical exploitation of Africa’s natural resources, aligning with the continent’s ambition for green industrialization and a fairer energy future.
