Brima Baluwa Koroma, the Executive Chairman of the Petroleum Regulatory Agency and National Committee Chairman for Sierra Leone, delivered a compelling and forward-looking address at this year’s World Petroleum Council (WPC) Executive Committee meeting, held in Washington, D.C. The congress, hosted by the American Petroleum Institute, gathered industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss pressing issues and opportunities within the global energy sector.

In his address, Mr. Koroma stressed the urgent need for global participation in the energy transformation drive, calling for collaborative efforts to address the myriad challenges facing the industry today. “Energy transformation is not just a challenge; it is an opportunity that requires a unified approach among nations,” he stated. He emphasized that countries must work together to innovate and implement sustainable practices that align with both economic growth and environmental stewardship.

Mr. Koroma highlighted several key areas for focus, including the integration of renewable energy sources, investment in new technologies, and the importance of regulatory frameworks that facilitate energy transition. He noted that as the world shifts towards greener energy solutions, it is crucial for all stakeholders, from governments to private enterprises, to engage actively in this transformation. “We must prioritize strategic collaborations and knowledge sharing to foster a resilient and sustainable energy future,” he added.

A significant aspect of Mr. Koroma’s participation was his opportunity to engage in bilateral discussions with prominent figures in the energy sector. He met with WPC Executive Director Burcu Gunel and David K. Curtis, Executive Director of the American Petroleum Institute. These discussions were focused on exploring partnerships and cooperative initiatives that could benefit not only Sierra Leone but also the broader West African region in the context of energy development.

Accompanying Mr. Koroma was Mr. Ishmail Koivaya Saffa, Head of Logistics and Procurement at the Petroleum Regulatory Agency. Together, they represented Sierra Leone’s commitment to playing an active role in the global energy dialogue. Their presence at the WPC Congress underscored the nation’s readiness to contribute to innovative solutions in energy regulation and sustainability.

Throughout the meeting, Mr. Koroma also addressed the importance of capacity building and education in the energy sector. He argued that empowering local communities and stakeholders with the necessary skills and knowledge is essential for effective implementation of energy initiatives. “Investing in human capital is just as important as investing in infrastructure. Our workforce must be equipped to meet the demands of a rapidly changing energy landscape,” he asserted.

The congress concluded with a call to action for all participants to recommit to their roles in shaping a sustainable energy future. Mr. Koroma’s insights and engagements at the meeting are expected to pave the way for enhanced cooperation and shared learning, positioning Sierra Leone as a proactive player in the ongoing global energy transition.

As the world grapples with the dual challenges of rising energy demand and climate change, Mr. Koroma’s advocacy for collaborative, strategic approaches in energy transformation stands as a testament to Sierra Leone’s dedication to being an influential voice in the international energy conversation. His efforts at the WPC Congress are anticipated to lead to fruitful partnerships and initiatives that will advance not only Sierra Leone’s energy goals but also contribute positively to global efforts in sustainability.
