Africell Sierra Leone, the country’s leading telecommunications provider, officially launched the 3rd edition of the highly anticipated Freetown Marathon during a vibrant ceremony held on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the company’s headquarters in Wilberforce, Freetown. The event, which promises to bring together runners from across the nation, will take place on Sunday, December 8, 2024, and aims to promote fitness, community engagement, and showcase Sierra Leone’s scenic beauty.
The marathon will feature four race categories to accommodate a wide range of participants:
- Full Marathon (42.195 km): 6:30 AM start
- Half Marathon (21.097 km): 7:00 AM start
- 10K Race: 7:15 AM start
- 5K Fun Run: 7:20 AM start
All races will start and finish at Africell’s Beach Data Center, and participants can register by dialing *227# via Afrimoney.
Africell’s Managing Director, Mr. Shadi Gerjawi, expressed his excitement at the event’s return, calling it “more than just a race.” He emphasized that the marathon is a celebration of health, perseverance, and community spirit. “We are proud to bring people together for this inspiring event, which has grown in importance year after year,” said Mr. Gerjawi.
Mr. Gerjawi also highlighted the power of partnerships in making the event a success. Africell has long partnered with organizations like Street Child, with whom they have collaborated on previous marathons, including the Makeni Marathon. “These partnerships help ensure we not only bring people together for a fun and challenging event but also support meaningful social causes,” he said.
This year’s marathon will offer increased incentives, with prize money growing by 40% compared to previous years. Africell’s Marketing Communications Manager, Mr. Kamanda Koroma, encouraged both new and returning participants to sign up. He assured the public that medical teams will be on-site throughout the event to ensure safety.
“Our focus is on health and community connection,” said Mr. Koroma. “This event is open to everyone—whether you’re an experienced runner or someone looking to have fun. We want you to be a part of it!”
The Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA), which will provide the technical expertise for the marathon, also pledged its full support. SLAA’s Head of Media, Mr. Dalton Shyllon, noted that the marathon could offer international exposure for Sierra Leonean athletes, potentially paving the way for them to represent Sierra Leone on the world stage.
“The Freetown Marathon is a key event for local athletes aiming to compete globally. We are proud to be involved in this important sporting initiative,” said Shyllon.
Sports journalists will also benefit from the event, with Sierra Leone Sports Writers Association President, Mr. Sahr Morris Jr., stating that covering the Freetown Marathon provides valuable experience. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our journalists to gain insights and potentially cover prestigious global events like the London Marathon in the future,” he explained.
Africell’s CEO reiterated that the marathon is a family-friendly event and emphasized the vibrant atmosphere that accompanies the race. “This is an event where everyone—dignitaries, families, and citizens alike—can come together and experience the energy and spirit of Sierra Leone,” said Gerjawi.
Africell’s continued commitment to promoting healthy living and community development is central to the Freetown Marathon, which has become one of Sierra Leone’s key annual events. The company is calling on citizens from all regions to register and participate in what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Sierra Leone’s resilience and community spirit.
Registration for the marathon is now open via Afrimoney by dialing *227#, and participants are encouraged to sign up early to secure their spots.
