APC Secures Defections from SLPP Supporters in Bonthe District Ahead of 2028 Elections

The Strategic Communication Unit of the All People’s Congress (APC) has proudly announced a significant shift in political allegiance in Bonthe District, Sierra Leone’s southern region. A number of loyal supporters from the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) have officially joined the APC, marking a key development ahead of the upcoming 2028 elections.
On Sunday, November 17, 2024, in Bo, following the Southern Region Fundraising Dinner, over fifty individuals from Bonthe District — the birthplace of President Julius Maada Bio — made the decision to defect from the SLPP and pledge their allegiance to the APC. The defection represents a major shift, as these individuals had previously been aligned with the ruling party but have now chosen to support the opposition ahead of the next general elections.
Foday Kallon, one of the notable defectors, explained that the primary motivation for his switch was the government’s disregard for its supporters. Despite years of loyalty to the SLPP, Kallon stated that many constituents felt neglected and had seen little improvement in their lives. “We have been loyal to the government, but we have received little in return,” Kallon said, emphasizing the unmet promises that fueled his decision.
Isata Alieu, a mother of two, echoed similar concerns, stating that the deteriorating economic conditions under President Bio’s administration had severely affected her family and community. Alieu highlighted the rising cost of living, unemployment, and economic hardship as factors that led her to reconsider her political allegiance, opting instead for a party she believes can offer a better future for Sierra Leoneans.
The event, which saw the defection of these individuals, was a historic moment for the APC. It was marked by speeches from several key party figures, including National Chairman Hon. Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray, Lansana Dumbuya Esq., Sidi Yayah Tunis, and Hon. Wurroh Timbo, who all spoke passionately about the need for change and the APC’s vision for a more prosperous Sierra Leone. The event was also attended by the Bonthe District Chairman, Comrade Mohamed Sheriff, who expressed his gratitude to the new members for their support and commitment to the party.
The defection in Bonthe District is seen as an important signal for the APC as it prepares for the 2028 elections. With a number of influential figures and dedicated supporters from the SLPP now shifting their allegiance, the APC is positioning itself as a serious contender in the upcoming elections. The party has emphasized its focus on restoring economic stability, creating job opportunities, and improving the welfare of all Sierra Leoneans.
As the political landscape of Sierra Leone continues to evolve, the APC is confident that these defections, combined with their ongoing efforts to engage with voters across the country, will help drive their campaign for a stronger, more inclusive government.
