US Boosts Sierra Leone’s Security with Key Military Handover

The United States government has officially transferred control of the ECOWAS Logistics Training Depot to the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), marking a new chapter in the country’s defense and security efforts. This Depot, established in 2002, has been instrumental in enhancing the operational readiness of military forces across Africa, having trained more than 1,600 soldiers from 15 different nations. These forces have contributed to crucial peacekeeping operations in conflict zones like Sudan, Somalia, and Liberia.
In addition to the handover, the US government provided the RSLAF with critical resources, including 194 vehicles and over 29,000 communication devices. These provisions are aimed at strengthening Sierra Leone’s security infrastructure and improving its ability to participate in peacekeeping and stability operations across the region.

US Ambassador to Sierra Leone, David Hunt, highlighted the strategic significance of this donation, noting that it would greatly assist in the protection of Sierra Leone’s territorial integrity, internal security, and democratic values. He also emphasized that the training of over 200 RSLAF personnel in logistics and operational management would ensure that the Depot continues to support both Sierra Leone and the wider West African region’s security needs.
The ECOWAS Logistics Training Depot is one of two key facilities designed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to facilitate rapid response during regional crises, store vital resources, and coordinate joint military operations. This transition occurs at a critical time, as Sierra Leone is preparing to host a peacekeeping force of 1,200 soldiers as part of the ECOWAS Counter-Terrorism Force (CTForce), which will be tasked with stabilizing the nation and deterring any unconstitutional changes in government.
