Freetown, Sierra Leone — Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella has outlined Sierra Leone’s ambitious energy goals under the Mission 300 Compact, a national initiative designed to significantly expand access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy by 2030.
According to Dr. Yumkella, the plan aims to increase electricity access from 36% to 78%, boost the share of renewable energy from 46% to 52%, and expand installed generation capacity from 271 megawatts (MW) to 1.12 gigawatts (GW). The compact also targets an increase in clean cooking access from a mere 1.5% to 25%, while private sector investment is expected to more than double—from $615 million to $1.4 billion—between 2025 and 2030.
Funding for these ambitious targets will come from a blend of private sector investments and government contributions, reflecting Sierra Leone’s commitment to advancing energy security, climate resilience, and economic growth through public-private collaboration.
Dr. Yumkella emphasized that the Mission 300 Compact represents a transformative pathway toward universal energy access and sustainable development, positioning Sierra Leone as a leader in renewable energy innovation within the West African region.
