Africa’s Global Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has once again reaffirmed its position as a catalyst for youth empowerment and leadership development across the continent. In a resounding demonstration of this commitment, the bank has welcomed 700 young professionals into its workforce through the Graduate Management Accelerated Programme (GMAP) — a flagship talent development initiative that continues to shape the next generation of leaders driving Africa’s growth and transformation.

The graduation ceremony, held on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at the Landmark Events Centre in Lagos, was a vibrant celebration of ambition, excellence, and the promise of a brighter African future. The event brought together graduates from Nigeria and other African countries where UBA operates, creating a powerful mosaic of talent, diversity, and shared purpose.

Present at the ceremony were distinguished personalities including UBA Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, Deputy Group Managing Director, Chukwuma Nweke, members of the Board, Executive Management, and faculty members of the GMAP. Together, they warmly received the new graduates into what is fondly known as the UBA Tribe — a community built on innovation, excellence, and shared values.

Transforming Potential into Leadership

Since its inception just over three years ago, the Graduate Management Accelerated Programme (GMAP) has become one of the most impactful career development initiatives on the continent. The programme, designed to identify, nurture, and empower young talents, has already produced over 4,000 professionals who now occupy key positions within the bank and beyond.

The GMAP combines rigorous academic training, hands-on experience, and leadership mentorship to ensure participants are not only prepared for the challenges of modern banking but are also equipped to lead innovation in Africa’s financial landscape. The six-month intensive programme blends classroom learning, digital simulations, field assignments, and mentorship from senior executives — ensuring that graduates gain a 360-degree understanding of the financial ecosystem.

A Vision Rooted in Empowerment

In his keynote address, Tony Elumelu, the visionary Group Chairman of UBA, described the graduates as “lions and lionesses,” symbolising the courage, drive, and tenacity the bank expects them to bring into their professional journeys.

“We are happy to have you as part of this tribe,” Elumelu said with pride. “At UBA, we strongly believe in the transformative power of young people. That’s why we designed this programme to transfer the baton of knowledge and experience to the next generation. A few decades ago, I was once in your shoes — fresh out of university, filled with ambition and uncertainty. Today, I am proud that this organisation continues to offer the same opportunity that helped shape my own journey. I look forward to seeing you prove your worth and lead with impact.”

Elumelu underscored that UBA’s mission goes beyond financial success. “This bank is not just about profit,” he noted. “It is about purpose — being relevant to the society, empowering lives, and catalysing prosperity across Africa.”

Nurturing Leaders for Africa’s Future

Representing the Group Managing Director, Oliver Alawuba, Deputy Managing Director Chukwuma Nweke congratulated the graduates for their perseverance and dedication throughout the programme. He described the graduation not merely as an end but as the beginning of a journey toward leadership and transformation.

“This ceremony is a celebration of potential, perseverance, and purpose,” Nweke said. “You are not just graduates; you are innovators, leaders, and ambassadors of an enduring legacy. Africa’s future will not be defined by chance, but by capable and courageous leaders — leaders like you.”

He also reaffirmed UBA’s unwavering belief in human capital development, describing it as the cornerstone of sustainable growth. He urged the graduates to embrace curiosity, integrity, and resilience as they take up roles within the bank.

Charting a Path Toward Innovation and Inclusion

With this new cohort, UBA’s global workforce now exceeds 25,000 employees, serving over 45 million customers worldwide. The graduates were charged to take ownership of their careers and become agents of change — driving transformation in technology, customer experience, and sustainability.

As UBA continues to expand its footprint across 20 African countries and major global financial centres — including the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and the United Arab Emirates — the bank remains focused on its vision of connecting Africa to the world through innovation and financial inclusion.

The GMAP initiative, therefore, stands as a testament to UBA’s belief that Africa’s greatest resource is its people — and that by empowering young professionals with the tools, mindset, and mentorship to lead, the continent’s future will continue to shine brighter.

United Bank for Africa (UBA) remains one of Africa’s most respected and forward-looking financial institutions — a true pan-African brand that blends tradition with innovation, profit with purpose, and leadership with service. Through initiatives like the GMAP, UBA continues to invest in the people who will write the next chapter of Africa’s economic story
