The spirit of learning, ambition, and youthful promise took center stage at the National Spelling Bee Competition Orientation held on April 4, 2026, as pupils, educators, and key stakeholders convened in an atmosphere charged with excitement and purpose.

The orientation marked the official beginning of what promises to be a transformative academic journey for young participants, many of whom are eager to test their linguistic abilities, build confidence, and embrace the discipline that comes with competitive learning. The event served not only as a preparatory session but also as a platform to inspire, motivate, and align expectations for the competition ahead.

Among the distinguished representatives present was Augustine Martin, External and Media Relations Officer of United Bank for Africa, whose participation underscored the bank’s enduring commitment to education and youth empowerment in Sierra Leone. His presence reflected UBA’s broader philosophy of investing in human capital development as a pathway to national growth.

Taking the podium, Augustine delivered a thoughtful and engaging address that resonated strongly with both pupils and educators. He highlighted the importance of literacy as a foundational skill that not only shapes academic success but also enhances communication, critical thinking, and self-expression.

“Education remains one of the most powerful tools for transformation,” he noted, emphasizing that initiatives like the National Spelling Bee play a crucial role in nurturing intellectual curiosity and academic excellence among young learners.

He further reaffirmed UBA Sierra Leone’s commitment to supporting impactful educational initiatives through the UBA Foundation. According to him, the Foundation continues to design and implement programs that empower young people to unlock their potential and pursue excellence across various fields.

In addition, Augustine spotlighted the ongoing UBA Foundation 5th National Essay Competition, encouraging pupils to actively participate in such opportunities that challenge their creativity, expand their thinking, and build confidence in their abilities. He stressed that platforms like these are essential in grooming well-rounded individuals capable of contributing meaningfully to society.

A key highlight of his address was the emphasis on leadership support within the institution. Augustine conveyed the strong vision and dedication of the Managing Director/CEO, Mohamed Alhajie Samoura, describing him as a passionate advocate for youth development and educational advancement.

He noted that under the MD’s leadership, UBA Sierra Leone continues to prioritize investments in initiatives that nurture confident, articulate, and forward-thinking young leaders. This commitment, he explained, goes beyond corporate responsibility—it reflects a deliberate effort to shape the future by empowering the next generation.

The orientation itself featured interactive sessions designed to familiarize participants with the structure, rules, and expectations of the competition. Educators and organizers also provided guidance aimed at helping pupils approach the competition with discipline, focus, and a growth mindset.

As the event drew to a close, Augustine left the young participants with an inspiring message—urging them to embrace the journey ahead with curiosity, determination, and enthusiasm. He encouraged them to view the competition not merely as a contest, but as an opportunity to learn, grow, and discover their unique potential.

His participation ultimately reinforced UBA Sierra Leone’s role as a key partner in advancing educational initiatives across the country. More broadly, it echoed a vision driven by purposeful leadership—one in which education is not only valued but actively supported as a catalyst for empowerment, innovation, and sustainable national development.

As anticipation builds for the competition itself, the orientation has already set a strong tone—one defined by aspiration, preparation, and a shared commitment to nurturing the bright minds that will shape Sierra Leone’s future
