UN Secretary-General Commends President Bio for Leadership in Security Council Reform

United Nations Headquarters, New York, Tuesday 13 August 2024 – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has lauded Sierra Leone’s President, His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, for his pivotal role in advancing the debate on reforming the United Nations Security Council.
During a bilateral meeting, Secretary-General Guterres reaffirmed his strong backing for increased African representation on the Council, acknowledging the historical injustices that have long marginalized the continent. He expressed satisfaction with the recent debate on this critical issue, highlighting the positive reception from all Council members regarding the need for reform.
“I want to congratulate you on the extraordinary success in yesterday’s debate. Your leadership and voice have been vital, particularly in addressing the challenges in the Sahel. We deeply appreciate your efforts,” stated Guterres.
President Bio, in response, expressed his gratitude for the Secretary-General’s unwavering support. He urged the international community to translate its commitments into tangible actions, particularly in addressing Africa’s representation on the Security Council. Additionally, President Bio underscored the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel, emphasizing the need for sustained global attention and intervention.
“We admire you as a continent not only because you have stood by us, but also because you have spoken against injustice in the structure of the Security Council. I will also continue to promote peace and stability in the Sahel region,” President Bio affirmed.
