Doubt and Discontent: APC Members Question Party’s Direction as 2028 Elections Approach

Supporters of the All People’s Congress (APC) party have voiced growing concerns about the party’s uncertain future as the political landscape in Sierra Leone continues to evolve. “Our APC is in rubble. Who will help rescue our party from this wilderness that hangs in the balance?” lamented Isatu Suma, a dedicated party member. Her words reflect a sentiment of despair among many within the party, who feel that internal divisions and external challenges have left them adrift.
Suma pointed to the increasing discourse surrounding the restoration of democracy and the much-anticipated tripartite recommendations, which many believe could pave the way for a more democratic political environment. However, she remains skeptical about the impact of these discussions on the APC’s prospects. “There’s so much noise, but it’s hard to see any clear path forward,” she added.
A significant point of contention among party supporters is the recent influx of bloggers who have taken to social media to share various opinions and unverified information regarding the party’s situation. “I believe some of these bloggers are not true APC members. They seem more focused on attacking our elders than providing any meaningful direction,” Suma criticized. This sentiment was echoed by other supporters who feel that such behavior undermines the party’s unity and focus.
Memunatu Jalloh, a vocal supporter from the Allen Town community, expressed frustration with fellow party members who continue to raise hopes about the official announcement of the tripartite recommendations. “The party has more jokers than serious contenders ready to redeem our country from this abyss of darkness and poverty,” she asserted. Jalloh emphasized the dire economic conditions facing the populace, highlighting the dramatic rise in the cost of living: “We are not at war, but what we are experiencing is life-threatening. The cost of staple foods has skyrocketed; a cup of pepper now sells for Le 20, and other basic commodities are equally expensive.”
Amidst these challenges, many supporters are increasingly doubtful about the APC’s chances in the upcoming elections. Concerns are mounting that the ambition of individual members to ascend to the presidency is overshadowing the party’s collective goals. Notable figures like Dr. Richard Conteh, Samuel Sam Sumana, Dr. Fornah, and JFK appear to be focusing their energies on the 2028 elections, seemingly dismissing the pressing concerns arising from the recent electoral cycle. “It feels like many have already moved on, treating the 2023 elections as a closed chapter,” said one supporter.
Supporters report that some party members are quietly positioning themselves for future leadership roles, suggesting a lack of urgency in addressing the electoral grievances stemming from the June 2023 elections, which saw President Julius Maada Bio declared the winner amidst controversy. “We are still confused about the truth surrounding the 2023 elections,” one supporter remarked, underscoring a lingering distrust in the electoral process.
Many APC supporters have indicated that if the issues surrounding the June 24, 2023, election ballot papers are not addressed fairly, they may choose not to vote in the upcoming 2028 elections. This decision reflects a broader disillusionment with the political process, as many feel their voices have been marginalized.
At the Calaba Town APC Ataya Base, a hub for party gatherings, opinions are mixed. While some supporters remain hopeful for the APC’s return to power, advocating for unity and proactive engagement in the political landscape, others advise their colleagues to shift their focus toward the upcoming general elections in 2028. “We need to stop dwelling on the past and start planning for the future,” one member urged.
Amidst various gatherings, the information circulating among APC supporters remains uncertain and often contradictory, leaving their hopes suspended in “limbo.” Many are grappling with the question of how to reinvigorate the party while addressing the pressing issues facing their communities. As they navigate these challenges, the future of the APC remains a topic of heated discussion, with supporters eager for a path forward but uncertain about what lies ahead.
