MIC Chernor Bah, Conducts First Official Visit to Newly Led Independent Media Commission

On Thursday, 25th July 2024, the Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, along with his team, made an official visit to the Independent Media Commission (IMC) Aureole House Headquarters in Freetown. This visit marked the first since Joseph Egbenda Kapuwa Esq. assumed the role of Chairman.
In a warm reception, Chairman Kapuwa expressed his appreciation for the visit, noting his anticipation. He highlighted the strong working relationship developed with his staff over the past three months and emphasized the Commission’s commitment to swift, positive outcomes.
Executive Secretary Kahlil Kallon introduced the IMC staff and commissioners, outlining the Commission’s activities. These included weekly complaint hearings, familiarization visits to regional offices, program alignments with community radio stations, and the implementation of new policies for print and electronic media.
Commissioner James Tamba Lebbie, representing the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) in the IMC, provided details on engagements such as national consultations, the review of the IMC Act, and the regulation of online media. He emphasized the need for better support for public service media and community radio stations.
Other commissioners, including Barrie, Professor Taylor, and Mustapha Sesay, addressed issues such as the need for adequate operational space, improved salaries and allowances, capacity enhancement, and the provision of vehicles to support the Commission’s activities.
In response, Minister Bah acknowledged the challenges faced by the IMC and emphasized the importance of their work. He announced an increased budget allocation for the IMC, reflecting the President’s support for the Commission’s efforts. The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to media regulation, combating fake news, and addressing hate speech.
Minister Bah highlighted the necessity for media practitioners to be registered members of SLAJ and underscored the importance of the IMC’s role in regulating the media landscape. He promised to advocate for the disbursement of funds to the IMC and support the installation of solar systems for community radio stations.
The meeting concluded with Commissioner Ethel Johnson expressing gratitude for the Minister’s visit and commending Chairman Kapuwa for his proactive leadership and dedication to the Commission’s mission.
