During the celebration of World Breastfeeding Week at Atlantic Hotel, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Madam Fatmata Kargbo delivered a unique speech to commemorate the day. Madam Kargbo expressed her great honor in addressing the guests who were joining the global community in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week 2024. She highlighted this year’s theme, “Breastfeeding Support for All.”

Madam Kargbo emphasized that the theme aligns with the national commitment to promoting health, equity, and economic development. She stressed that breastfeeding is essential for child health and development, providing nutritional benefits, strengthening the immune system, and fostering a special bond between mother and child.

The Deputy Minister referenced the World Health Organization and UNICEF’s recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding with complementary foods for up to two years or beyond. She emphasized the importance of this practice for the healthy growth and cognitive development of children.

Madam Kargbo also discussed the economic implications of breastfeeding, noting that it reduces healthcare costs by preventing illnesses and malnutrition. Healthier children lead to a healthier future workforce, contributing to increased productivity and economic growth. She highlighted the importance of breastfeeding support for women in trade, especially those engaged in Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), to enhance their productivity and well-being.

In Sierra Leone, women play a significant role in the trade sector, particularly in markets and small businesses. By closing the gap in breastfeeding support, these women can balance their economic activities with family responsibilities, improving their quality of life and business potential.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry, under the leadership of President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, is committed to promoting breastfeeding as a national priority aligned with the country’s development goals.
