Minister Turad Senesie Addresses Unauthorized Occupations on Magburaka Land

In a significant move towards reclaiming and protecting government reservation lands, Dr. Turad Senesie, Minister of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning, announced plans to address encroachments on the Magburaka reservation land during a stakeholders meeting on September 24, 2024.
The meeting, attended by key local figures including the host Paramount Chief, police LUC, council authorities, and land users, focused on the future of the 851 acres of land that have faced unauthorized occupation.
Following the successful reclamation of the Bo and Kenema airfields, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring land integrity nationwide.

Tamba S. Dauda, Director of Surveys and Land, confirmed that the government has settled backlog lease rents and compensated land-owning families, laying the groundwork for the current initiative.
The minister outlined two potential courses of action regarding the encroachments. Currently, only 335 acres of the original reservation land remain unencroached. The first option would require all encroachers to vacate the land, which could lead to the demolition of properties and legal action against noncompliant individuals. The second option would consider regularizing ownership for encroachers, contingent upon payment of fines and the official ownership of the occupied plots. Funds generated from this process would be used to acquire additional unoccupied land in the township for government development purposes.
To facilitate these actions, a multi-stakeholder committee has been established to evaluate the options and implement necessary measures. The police LUC has been tasked with ensuring that all activities on the land are halted until a final decision is reached.
The minister’s proactive approach underscores the government’s dedication to reclaiming land for public development and upholding the rule of law regarding land ownership. Stakeholders are encouraged to participate in ongoing discussions to promote responsible land management and community development in Magburaka.
